What about potential complexity? I.e., the latent possibility of a system to exhibit complex behavior as it evolves.
The first instance after the big bang, the universe was an immensly simple and ordered system. An energy content and four fundamental laws set in a quantum mechanical environment.
Would it be possible to detect that this system has a huge potential to produce complex structures?

taken for granted: cpu's, moors law, storage, cheaper and faster, towards quantum computing, dvd's, lasers, microwaves, cell phones and global coverage, gps, internet...
however, the knowledge and technology for a species to transport a lump of metal to an orbit around the world is astounding.
